Tabby Panel – Part 2

My dad finished the background for the tabby cat panel, and I love the way it turned out.

Instead of copying the Italian landscape in the background of Fra Giovanni’s piece, I suggested that the background of our panel could be Mt. Tom, a small mountain that we can see from the windows of the woodshop.

A photograph of Mt. Tom in Easthampton, Massachusetts, viewed from a few miles away. There are buildings in the foreground and autumn leaves on the trees. The photo was taken at sunset.

Below is the tabby on top of the background prior to being cut into the background.

Photograph of a marquetry project in progress. The image is a tabby cat, with excess wood around the edges, sitting in front of an arch with a landscape in the backgound.

And below is the cat after I cut it into the background.

Photograph of the same marquetry panel in progress, this time with the cat cut into the background.

To really celebrate our local culture, I added some additional landmarks in colored pencil. These will not show up on the final piece, because they are on the side of the veneer that is glued down, but I will know that they are there.

Photograph of the same marquetry panel, with a 7-Eleven store and a part of a Family Dollar sign drawn in the background in colored pencil.

I glued the marquetry to a piece of MDF and put it in the press this afternoon, and tomorrow I will take it out and sand it.
